Route & Itinerary for the Lower Klamath Renaissance Tour and Reception
We welcome you to the Lower Klamath Renaissance Tour! Below you will find the schedule for the day and a short synopsis of what to expect at each stop.
Please remember that with the presentations and resulting conversations, the timing of the schedule may vary.
8:45 am, Running Y Resort
Check-in for the tour begins in the Running Y Resort lobby. The bus will be parked under the awning at the lodge.
9:00 am, Running Y Resort
Bus departs from the Running Y Resort. If you happen to miss catching the tour bus, please note you can catch it at the Midland Rest Area.
9:10 am, Midland Rest Area
Check-in for guests who following the tour in their own vehicles and for guests who are meeting the bus at this stop.
9:15 am , Midland Rest Area
Bus to arrive at Midland Rest Area. Bus will depart at 9:25 am.
9:30 am, Klamath Drainage District’s F/FF Pumping Station
KDD manager, Scott White, will discuss the importance of the F/FF Pumping Station to the district as well as how it will impact the restoration efforts for Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge and within the district. Karl Wenner will also talk about the Rat Club, which is visible from this stop, and its importance to the birds of the Pacific Flyway and to Lower Klamath.
After leaving Station F/FF, the tour will drive through KDD via Zuckerman Road to where the Ady Canal meets Stateline Road.
10:15 am, Ady Canal @ Stateline Road
Amelia Raquel, Regional Biologist for Ducks Unlimited, will talk about restoration projects by Duck Unlimited, including the Highline Canal and Ady Connection to Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge.
Friends of Klamath Basin Birding representatives Loree Johnson and Mary Williams Hyde will also discuss the effects of drying up of LKNWR on area wildlife and birds of the Pacific Flyway.
Departing the Ady Canal, the tour will then venture onto LKNWR via Eagle/Willow Road. This loop will show impact of the water curtailment on the landscape and to the birds of LKNWR.
11:15 am, Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge Kiosk and Restrooms
At this stop John Vradenburg, Supervisory Biologist for the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges, will discuss the conditions on LKNWR and its impact on wildlife.
12:00 pm, Liskey Farms
Lunch!
The Modoc Nation is providing bison burgers for guests. KDD president, Bill Walker, and KWUA president, Tracey Liskey will greet our guests. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet some of the farmers and ranchers in KDD as well as watch a presentation about the Klamath Falls National Fish Hatchery, which is also on the Liskey Farm.
2:00 pm, Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge
Ken Sandusky of the Modoc Nation will discuss projects the nation is working on, including juniper removal and native grass re-seeding. At this stop Ken will also discuss two Modoc village sites, Shapa’sh and Stu’ikish, as well as the microclimatic effects of dewatering he’s encountered on the Modoc Nation’s ranch.
3:00 pm, Midland Rest Area
The tour bus will drop off guests who met the bus at the rest area before completing the drive back to the Running Y Resort.
3:15 pm, Running Y Resort
The tour bus will drop off guests who joined us at the Running Y Lodge in the morning.
5:00 pm, Juniper Hall at the Running Y Resort
Doors open for the Lower Klamath Renaissance Tour reception. Guests will be treated to heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Along with presenters and attendees, guests will have an opportunity to meet KDD land owners.
5:45 pm, Juniper Hall at the Running Y Resort
Officials from Klamath County, Siskiyou County, and the Oregon governor’s office will greet our guests. The presentations we have lined up are:
- Anna Kliewer, local high school student who will talk about the impact of the Winter Wings Festival cancellation had on the Klamath Basin.
- Scott Seus, on behalf of KWUA, will share other restoration projects happening around the Klamath Basin, including the work for Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
- Karl Wenner, Lakeside Farms, will give a presentation about the projects happening at Lakeside Farms and what they’re witnessing.
7:00 pm, Juniper Hall at the Running Y Resort
